17 Jul The PRESAGE Technology Stack
If you’ve looked around at all about what’s going on in the accounting space, you’ll see a lot of talk about something called the “Tech Stack”. In this article we’ll explain what it is, why it’s important, and how we do it here at PRESAGE.
What is a Technology Stack?
A technology stack refers to the combination of software, programming languages, frameworks, tools, and infrastructure that a company utilizes to build and run its applications and services. It’s like a layered cake, where each layer represents a different component of the technology used to create a cohesive and functional system.
Cybersecurity for Financial Data
Not long ago, a Deloitte survey found that almost half of executives anticipated a rise in cyber events targeting their organizations’ accounting and financial data in the coming year. About 35% of those surveyed had already experienced cyberattacks on their accounting and financial data within the previous 12 months. Surprisingly, cybersecurity was not considered a top investment priority for fewer than 30% of small businesses, according to a separate survey. Instead, business owners were more focused on financial, productivity, and customer relationship management software.
Why is this important? According to the US National Cyber Security Alliance, 60% of small businesses that suffer a cyber-attack go out of business within just 6 months!
PRESAGE’s Technology Stack
At PRESAGE, protecting client data is the most important part of what we do. Neither we, nor our client’s, can stay in business if data is compromised in any way.
Components
The PRESAGE infrastructure is composed of a minimum number of cloud-based systems as illustrated in the diagram below:
- Microsoft 365: Our primary collaboration tools are contained within the Microsoft ecosystem including, Exchange Email, SharePoint portals, Teams, Groups and the Office Suite.
- Groups: Clients communicate with staff via a shared mailbox associated with a Microsoft Group created just for them. Each Group has a unique email address (alias@presagefinancial.com) where they send requests, comments, answers to questions, etc. Utilizing Groups allows PRESAGE to share/restrict these communications across multiple staff members easily by changing Group membership as necessary. The days of extracting messages from someone’s individual email box are over.
- Teams: Staff utilize the video-conferencing capabilities of Teams to meet and collaborate with clients.
- SharePoint Portals: We use SharePoint to securely store our work documents.
- Practice Protect: The Practice Protect Portal secures access to all our client systems (e.g., online banking, POS and payment processor data, vendor accounts) hiding the logins and passwords from them by seamlessly logging them into the system. Staff members are only able to see the applications for the clients they support.
- QuickBooks Online: In addition to being the primary accounting platform for clients, QBO also has a secure Shared Documents feature which is used to transfer documents that may contain any personally identifiable financial information (PIFI).

Features
Our technology stack design incorporates various features to ensure the utmost security for our clients:
- Cloud-Based Systems: All our systems are hosted on secure cloud platforms, significantly reducing cyber risks, such as ransomware attacks. These platforms also have built-in backups and disaster recovery.
- Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): We employ MFA, requiring a combination of login credentials (username and password) and a token from a smart device, adding an extra layer of protection to our systems.
- Centralized Access Management: Staff access to PRESAGE and client systems is tightly controlled through MFA integrated with either Azure/O365 or QuickBooks Online Accountant. This allows us to swiftly revoke access with just two changes, ensuring immediate security in case of any threat.
- Secure File Transfer: All sensitive files containing private information, such as tax documents, are transferred using the QuickBooks Shared Documents Folder feature, ensuring secure and encrypted data transmission.
At PRESAGE, our commitment to safeguarding your data and privacy is ingrained not only every aspect of our technology stack, but into our culture as well. We continuously update and optimize our infrastructure and systems to stay ahead of potential threats, so you can have peace of mind while focusing on your business’s success.
